October is American Pharmacists Month
Since the late 1800s, pharmaceutical science has supported healthcare efforts around the world. As chemistry, biology, and pharmacology experts, these impressive individuals work tirelessly to ensure patient safety and health by providing information and advice about the medications they dispense.
In recognition of the pharmacists who connect patients in need with all manner of medicine, Governor Abbot has officially declared October 2024 to be Pharmacist Month in Texas, coinciding with the celebration of October as American Pharmacists Month.
In his proclamation, the Governor highlighted pharmacists' remarkable accessibility, which allows them to deliver critical services and bolster public health in the Lone Star State. “Their work is nothing short of a godsend for people in the midst of health challenges," Abbott said, noting that pharmacists ensure optimal outcomes and encourage medication adherence.
"On the basis of their impact on individuals, families, and our society, pharmacists deserve the highest personal and professional regard," Abbott wrote. "During this observance and hereafter, I encourage all Texans to recognize our outstanding pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, who are essential to our health care system. Pharmacists use their specialized talents in service to the greater good, and their work will be of great value as we strive together toward a bigger, better Texas."
Pharmacists provide a wide range of essential healthcare services beyond simply dispensing medications. These compassionate individuals ensure patients manage medications correctly, detailing dosages and appropriate administration times while offering important information about drug interactions and side effects. They are available to help with critical health screenings and immunization services for patients of all ages. They review patients' medications for effectiveness and safety while collaborating with healthcare providers to optimize treatment plans for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. In short, pharmacists bridge the gap in patient care, acting as accessible healthcare providers to help individuals manage medications safely and effectively while offering preventive care and wellness services.
Today, more than 300,000 pharmacists, 400,000 pharmacy technicians, and 47,000 student pharmacists serve communities across the country. Their contribution to public health is essential to ensure better health outcomes. Pharmacists act as an invaluable and reliable support system, always available to answer questions and offer support.
This month, help us celebrate American Pharmacist Month and Pharmacists Month in Texas by showing appreciation and letting your neighborhood pharmacists know how vital they are to your and your community’s well-being.
